Four new and/or completely modernized DCPS schools are opening this fall with events this week and next:
- Bancroft Elementary, Ward 1, 1755 Newton St. NW, Thursday, August 16, 5:00 p.m. (also release of the city’s PARCC Assessment Scores)
- Boone Elementary (formerly Orr), Ward 8, 2200 Minnesota Ave SE, August 18, 4:00 p.m.
- MacFarland Middle School, Ward 4, 4400 Iowa Ave. NW, Monday, August 20, 3:30 p.m.
- Murch Elementary, Ward 3, 810 36th Street, NW, Saturday, August 18, 3:00 p.m.
These projects bring the number of new DCPS buildings up to 68 out of a total 111 DCPS buildings. With almost 30 buildings in the 2019-24, 6-year CIP (Capital Improvement Plan), DCPS is in the home stretch providing great school facilities. Focus now is on completing the remaining buildings to the same high standards: light-filled, spacious classrooms with ample technology, assembly rooms and gymnasiums, media centers, art rooms, music rooms, science labs – – and outdoor play spaces and athletic facilities that are world class.
DCPS SCHOOLS IN SWING SPACE AND UNDER CONSTRUCTION – Opening 2019
- Coolidge HS, Ward 4 is in trailers on site again this year. The fully modernized school is to be completed in August 2019. Simultaneously, the new Ward 4 Middle School (in the process of being named) will open, taking 6th graders from Takoma, Whittier, LaSalle-Backus, and Brightwood K-8s. Over the next two years, these schools will gradually become PK3-5th grade schools as their 7th and 8th graders graduate.
- Hyde Addison ES, Ward 2 is at Meyer ES for a second year of swing space. Hyde-Addison is to be completed in August 2019.
- Kimball ES, Ward 7 – This will be Kimball’s second year at Davis ES. Their new school is well into demolition and construction has started. It is on schedule to be completed in the fall of 2019.
- Maury ES, Ward 6 is in trailers at Eliot-Hine for the second year, while Eliot-Hine is swinging on site in the building. Maury is to be completed in August 2019.
- Stevens ES, Ward 2 – – This historic 1868 school was closed in 2008 but is scheduled to start construction as a city-wide early childhood center (PK3, PK4 and Kinder). Groundbreaking was on June 18, 2018. It will also house a program for infants to children three-years old. Stevens is part of a partnership with the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development.
DCPS SCHOOLS – – MOVING INTO SWING SPACE – Opening 2020
- Eliot-Hine MS, Ward 6 consolidates into on-site swing space this fall; next year they will move into the trailers vacated by Maury ES. Eliot-Hine is in schematic design and demolition has started; completion is expected for August 2020.
- CW Harris ES, Ward 7 moves into trailer classroom village next week. The project is in design development. The new school is scheduled to open August 2020.
- Houston ES, Ward 7 moves into a trailer village on site where they will be for most of two years. The building is in design with construction to be completed August 2020.
- Jefferson MS, Ward 6 is moving into trailers on site this fall as construction will be starting. The school is in schematic design. Opening is set for August 2020.
